The needs of adolescents on secondary school and vocational education (MBO) playgrounds differ fundamentally from those of primary school children. At this stage, young people seek autonomy, social connection, and space to either retreat or be visible. They want to decide for themselves where, with whom, and how they spend their time — and most importantly, not to feel directed.
This group is diverse, with a wide range of needs. Some seek calm or overview, while others look for activity, expression, or group dynamics. These preferences often overlap and shift as they develop.
The way boys and girls (and everyone in between or outside these categories) use the space also differs. Boys more often occupy the entire area with physical or competitive behavior, whereas girls tend to prefer the edges, areas with overview, and quieter spots.
